Why do you think the artistic community in Iowa is so important?

I believe the artistic community in Iowa is so important. We are all brought up in a society that tells us we should pursue the arts second to traditional jobs or those careers we know have a secure and steady flow of income. This happens mostly in our homes by our parents who honestly were just brought up in a different time and don’t understand the power our thoughts and mind have. They were taught to keep those things in and that there was no place for them in society, or we were told they’re just hobbies.

Those who disregard those people and views are placed in a category and labeled as different or weird. Thankfully today those types of words have alternate meanings and are embraced. Everyone wants to be “different” and everyone claims they are “weird”.

What do you think our community can work on/focus on/do better to support artists and create a safe space for artists?

We as a community need to open up to change and embrace the uniqueness of one another. We are in a very small minded society and when it comes to topics like these or viewpoints that don’t match our own, we talk down or shut those individuals out.
I personally have had the opportunity to live in one of the most artistic and diverse places in the world and I immediately fell in love with the culture and energy that kept that place flowing everyday. People focus on themselves and their dreams more so than the next persons. If you are inspired by someone or something out of the ordinary catches your attention you just want to know more about it or how to become involved in some way. It sparks something in you and I know it has a lot to do with the environment.
I hate speaking negatively about my home but we as a community need to stop tearing each other down because of our differences or because we chose the path less traveled. We all are different but we are all relatable, be inspired by one another.

Describe your passions and work.

My passions lie in many different places. Since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to do multiple things and have many different trades. Helping and interacting with others has been at the top of that list always. I have accomplished that so far through medicine. I have worked in the medical field on and off since 2013 and in that time I’ve seen many things. Healthcare education along with mental health awareness have been my main focus as of late.

I also am a model. For me, modeling is that form of art that I put on the back burner. I’ve seen how models were labeled and I always told myself I wanted to be more, not seeing the platform that it provides to those who use it properly. It has connected me with so many wonderful individuals and I do wish I would’ve initially taken it more seriously. But life is a series of lessons and you’re only truly living if you’re learning something from each one.

What pushed you/motivated you to do what you were doing today?

The future and its infinite amount of possibilities continues to push and motivate me. I try to keep a positive outlook on life, which isn’t always easy, but sometimes it’s all you can do. I believe in the future and that things will always get better because I believe good will always conquer everything else. There is far more good in this world than evil and negativity. You just have to be open to receiving that good, at all times.

What makes you magical and fabulous?

My individuality. Knowing there is no one else on this earth like me. My thoughts and experiences belong to me and have taught me so much about myself. They have allowed both my strengths and my weaknesses to be exposed and being able to accept those things about myself, especially the negatives, put me before anyone else in my mind. As long as I keep that energy and thought process, I am the most magical and fabulous person in this universe.

Who else should be highlighted? Give someone/an organization a shout-out!

Someone who has inspired me for so long. She is one of the most artistic, open-minded, and creative people that I have the pleasure of knowing personally. From make-up to styling to music and arts, I have learned so much from her. She continues to amaze me each day and sometimes she, like every one of us, deserves some recognition. It’s like chicken noodle soup for the soul. Ms. MahaRajaa Malikah Daaiyah Camp-Bey, or @sevenmindz on Instagram, deserves her own spotlight as well.
