Name: Katelynn Tracy, but I just go by Kate.
Do you have any events coming up?
Yes! I was just accepted to participate in an upcoming BraveArt pop-up show. 30% of sales will go to ArtForce Iowa, which is an organization that helps young at-risk teens develop their art and music skills. You can find details of the event on my website.
Where can we see or access your work?
No shows currently, but you can go to my website.

Why do you think the artistic community in Iowa is important?
I really think Iowa (especially DSM) is overlooked in terms of having much of an artistic community. Although, in a way, it’s an advantage to artists here. This kind of community is a lot more about growth, and building each other up, rather than it all being a struggling competition. A smaller community leads to a stronger bond between artists. It not only creates an environment to feel safe, but also supplies a space to learn and grow while also being challenged. You’re able to meet a lot more like-minded people and build genuine connections. I really think we have something special going on.
What do you think is important for our community to do better in supporting local artists and musicians?
Invite others to join events, especially those who may not be very involved in the arts already. Start going to more shows. Step out of your comfort zone and attend an event you wouldn’t normally go to. Go out and meet people. If you enjoyed your experience, tell them. A simple compliment goes a long way.
How can our community lift you up and support you?
I’m still fairly new to town, so I don’t know many people. I’d love to make more connections to share experiences with, so please, reach out! I love learning from others.
Describe yourself and describe your work!
I can basically be described as a ‘goofy human string bean’. Being kind is what I live by, and I can never get enough coffee (only iced or cold brew though). My mother describes me as someone “who can make friends in any situation”.
My art work often inhabits the verge between fascination and the macabre – a reminder that the mundane often hides a more morbid reality. I primarily work with acrylic paint, but am proficient in many other mediums.
My painting style can be described as illustrative, yet simplistic. I use a lot of bold lines and dark, rich colors.
My current ongoing project is the tarot card deck I’m designing. I’m also working on a fairly large self portrait.
Who else do you think we should lift up?
A big shoutout goes to all of my creative friends, especially my best buddy, Emma Grice. She’s a hairstylist at The Salon in Ames who deserves a lot of recognition for her work. As well, Cady Colosimo. She does photography in the Des Moines area and often helps me with taking photos of my art.
What makes you magic?
I wasn’t sure how to answer this, so I asked my best friend to answer it for me. This is what she had to say:
“The confident presence and self control you place into the world is part of your magic. Your magic is logical and well thought out. I think your ability to create an entire feeling and ambiance of “Kate” makes you magic. You present an entire feeling of calm and intrigue into the universe and those around you, like an aura almost. I think people feel drawn to you.”
